Ref.:   Up and Downgrading Type 1 Reaction (see attachment)

From: J A Barreto, Bauru, S. Paulo, Brazil

Dear LML readers,

The enclosed presentation in PDF format is from Dr Jaison Barreto from S. Paulo, Brazil.  It is part of a series of documents mostly dedicate to clinical leprosy.  We hope that many of you will find it interesting, will come into the discussion and will present more cases.  We would like to suggest that at the beginning simple, not complicated cases, just describing the symptoms and the signs of the disease will be most welcome.

We would like underline that no diagnosis is made on pictures.  The diagnosis of leprosy is clinical, based on the cardinal signs of the disease and, made after complete examination of the patient; particularly after systematic examination of skin and peripheral nerves.  A single lesion can show signs of a form of leprosy but, again, diagnosis (and classification) can only be based on the overall assessment of the patient.

Best regards,

B. Naafs, S. Noto, P A M Schreuder
